Why Your Car’s Alignment is So Important

Odds are you have the alignment of your car checked every once in a while. But a lot of people don’t realize just how important this service is. Car alignment is critical to not only the performance of your car, but also its longevity.

Car Alignment 101

Alignment doesn’t have as much to do with a car’s wheels as most people think. It’s geared more toward the suspension of a vehicle. The wheels are mounted on the suspension system. This allows the wheels to move up and down easily as you encounter bumps. If they didn’t move this way, your ride would be a lot rougher.
Over time, however, components in your suspension system can shift, due to potholes, minor accidents and other reasons. This shifting causes one or more wheels to go off line, instead of straight. This can result in rapid tire wear, and can also make it really difficult to handle your car. In severe cases, you might have a very hard time turning your vehicle.

How to Tell if Your Alignment is Off

The easiest way to tell if something’s wrong with your car’s alignment is to see how it drives. If you have the steering wheel pointed straight yet the car drifts to one side, you will need to have your alignment checked. Also, if one tire shows more signs of wear than the other ones, that’s another sign you have an alignment issue.
